Monthly Green Shopping List for Summer

This shopping list will provide for a thrifty, healthy, and delicious diet for a family of four, using prices from August 2009. Shop from this grocery list to make all the meals shown on the menu plan for a month. Or use it as a starting point for your own menu plan and a price check for products at the store. The sizes that go with the prices given are shown, but of course get the best deal you can. Summer produce still being harvested while the temperatures cool, so use this list as long as you can get ripe tomatoes and melons. For me, that means July through October.

Most items are organic or sustainably grown. Those that are not are marked "regular." For the most part, the regular items are minor baking ingredients for which the organic versions are very expensive, but of course buy them if you want to and can afford to. Regardless of price, no items contain high-fructose corn syrup or transfats. Unfortunately, peaches and melons are very hard to grow spray-free. I buy them from local growers, but if you want organic or spray-free fruit and can afford it, buy blueberries instead.

Compare this list to the thrifty regular shopping list. The lists are nearly the same, with these from green to thrifty:

  • Bottled lemon juice replaces fresh lemons
  • Kidney beans are used instead of Yellow Indian Woman Beans, which may be available only through mail order

One of the keys to good thrifty eating is to buy seasonally. Compare this list to the spring and winter lists.
